Storyline:
In 1927, novelist and author of erotica, Elinor Glyn, popularized the term “It”, “it” being sex appeal, sexuality. Because Glyn was so respectable (she looks like a society matron, with braids coiled around her head, and long flowing gowns) her endorsement of “It” as a concept was embraced by regular people. She made it okay to refer to sex. She wasn’t some vamp that society would want to shun. She tried to define “It”, and while the whole thing might seem rather silly now, it was a big deal at the time, and her definitions still hold. Sexiness may be overt, of course, but Glyn made the point that “indifference” was one of the key qualities of “It”. You KNOW you have “It”, so you don’t have to work too hard to show “It”. But that mix of confidence and indifference shows people that “you are not cold”. Some of the comments made about Elinor Glyn by her peers (Dorothy Parker, hilariously, said, “Elinor Glyn doesn’t have ‘It’. She has those.” hahaha) are hysterical, people who saw through the grande-dame pose, but the public loved the concept of “It”. Sex, in that context, was not dirty or “other” – it was something most people enjoyed, even “respectable” people, and why not have a little fun with it? Elinor Glyn sold her story “It” to Paramount for $50,000. She had listed a couple of people who had “It” and young Clara Bow, an up-and-coming actress, was one of them. The 1927 film It made Bow a superstar. She was the embodiment of the era, in the same way Zelda Fitzgerald was, and had the same manic voracious appetite for life. But, and this is key to her appeal, she wasn’t a “bad girl”, or a conniving manipulative gold-digger. She wanted to have fun, that’s all, like everyone did in the Roaring Twenties, and what’s wrong with a little fun?

Early romantic comedy directed by William C. DeMille and Cecil B. DeMille (even though the IMDb credits someone else). A poor girl (Edith Taliaferrpo) and poor boy (Florence Dagmar) work at the same department store but don't know one another. They've both got a week's vacation coming up and both decide to pretend to be rich in hopes of finding someone rich to marry them. They both end up at the same resort and eventually hook up with both thinking the other is rich. The biggest problem with this film is that, like most romantic comedies of today, the thing is just way too predictable but the star's charm keeps things going. The best scene is when the two go on a date at an expensive restaurant and the waiter keeps order the most expensive stuff on the menu not knowing the guy is poor and won't be able to pay for it.

Chased off by the antics of Hank the Mule, Dorothy ends up in her cornfield, where she realizes her family's Scarecrow is alive. She helps him down and he takes a tumble on the turnstyle. A cyclone soon arrives and leaves Dorothy, Scarecrow, Toto and Hank spinning around on a haystack, with Imogene the Cow flying soon after. Soon after their arrival, the Wizard of Oz issues a public decree that he is a humbug, to make sure no one ever finds out. Glinda pops up out of the background and transforms Toto into a man in a bulldog suit to serve as a better protector for Dorothy. Then they encounter the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, and Eureka. Nevertheless, she is captured by Momba, the Wicked Witch of the West (suggesting Baum thought the other witches were Mombe, Mombo, and Mombu, in keeping with the council in _Queen Zixi of Ix_) and her flying lizards and soldiers. Dorothy defeats Momba, and they arrive at the Emerald City just in time for the Wizard's going away party.

The comfortable and amiable Daniel Boone Brown, a resident of New York's water front, becomes the victim of a mad scientist's psychological experiments. For days, Dr. Ulrich Metz messes up Daniel's life, bringing on failing health, restless sleep, a nervous and irritable disposition, tardiness for work, and superstitions that cause worry and fear. Chaplins last 'silent' film, filled with sound effects, was made when everyone else was making talkies. Charlie turns against modern society, the machine age, (The use of sound in films ?) and progress. Firstly we see him frantically trying to keep up with a production line, tightening bolts. He is selected for an experiment with an automatic feeding machine, but various mishaps leads his boss to believe he has gone mad, and Charlie is sent to a mental hospital... When he gets out, he is mistaken for a communist while waving a red flag, sent to jail, foils a jailbreak, and is let out again. We follow Charlie through many more escapades before the film is out.

The idea of the film was apparently given to Chaplin by a young reporter, who told him about the production line system in Detroit, which was turning its workers into nervous wrecks. In the film, Charlie becomes literally trapped in the machine and, in one of his finest patches of comic invention, is battered and buffeted by an automatic feeding machine introduced by his bosses to save time and money. Cured after his breakdown, he is arrested when he picks up a red flag that has fallen off the back of a lorry, and runs down the street to return it, exactly the same time as a left-wing demonstration comes round the corner. He meets 'The Gamine' in the back of the police van, who has also been arrested for stealing bread. From then on the theme is about two nondescripts trying to get along in modern times. "Smile, though your heart is breaking ..."

Chris Buckwell, cruel and greedy czar of San Francisco's tenderloin, is heartless in his persecution of the Chinese, though he himself is secretly a half-caste. Buckwell, eager to possess the land of Don Hernández Vásquez, sends Michael Brandon, an unscrupulous attorney, to make an offer. Brandon's nephew, Terrence, meets the grandee's beautiful daughter, Dolores, while Vásquez refuses the offer. Terry tries to save the Vásquez land grants, but when Chris causes the grandee's death, Dolores takes an oath to avenge her father. Learning that Chris is a half-caste, Dolores induces his feeble-minded dwarf brother to denounce him; he captures her and Terry, but they are saved from torture and death by the great earthquake of 1906 that kills the villain.

The documentary presents the filmmakers' travel as a narrative of a return to an ancient past: they turn the pages of history backwards until they get to "the very first page". Therefore what they present to the audience in the documentary is not a culture in the present, but a culture of the past. Mention is made of a sort of genealogical quest for so-called Aryan origins of 3000 years ago, calling the Bakhtiari, "the Forgotten People". The film highlights migratory Anatolian and Iranian peoples as continuously in a struggle for survival: the hunter on the Taurus mountains "does not hunt for sport, he kills for food". The film presents the annual Bakhtiari migration to Iranian highlands, where several environmental difficulties stand in the way of the tribe, which over time has developed ingenious solutions to overcome them (barefoot trail cutting over snow-covered Zard Kuh, goat-skin floats at the river crossing, etc.).
